Roadside Storm

While going through my archives, I was drawn to some darker images with a lot of shadows in them. I hope this isn’t a reflection of my mood at the moment. I think it’s more a reaction to a lot of my recent photos being bright due to being out in the snow. Gotta balance out all that light!

I do love playing in the shadows to create a feel for my work. I think that there are times when a photo doesn’t have shadows in it and I get frustrated as I edit it. That was happening with a panorama I was editing after I had edited this shot. It just didn’t “feel” right as I worked on it as opposed to this photo.

I snapped this photo in northern Tibet as we tried to stay ahead of the storm. I was told that we needed to arrive where we were staying before the storm did or we’d likely have to pay a higher price for a room. I had gone on this trip on a whim and we were basically finding places to stay each night depending on what my incredible guide could find. Of course, I wasn’t helping by wanting to stop for shots like this. He’d see me tapping my camera as I looked out the window of the car and say, “I’ll find a spot where we can stop, but you have 5 minutes and we have to go.”

As I think of the traveling I won’t be doing this year, I’m incredibly grateful for all these trips. This is an amazing country and I hope that I don’t take it lightly that I’ve been able to travel around it with my camera.
